Helmut Newton has set another very important challenge in my career. The relationship between model and photographer is very important and it’s thanks to this alchemy that the best shots are taken! Sometimes, however, this combination is not always easy. That was the case with Newton. At the time he was a great photographer and I was honored to be able to pose for him. Too bad he just wanted to take nude pictures. And I don’t take nude photos. I remember that our work relationship started like this, with him screaming at me between the walls of the agency’s office “Do you know who I am?” And I replied with firm voice. “And do you know who I am? Bernie Marovt. And I don’t take nude photos. ”After a long discussion which I never gave up, I was unexpectedly contacted. I posed for him while kneeling in very uncomfortable and sometimes almost impossible positions due to high heels. On another occasion I was asked ungraciously to stand upright. But how could I stand vertically if the step I was resting on was sloping? However, despite the great effort we brought home some memorable portraits.
After several years I saw Newton once again, it was in Montecarlo. There he told me; “Bernie, you’re one of the best!” And that’s when I felt rewarded for all my efforts in having worked with him. I believe that in this work it is really fundamental to show character and to follow one’s principles without ever coming against them. Personally, I have never regretted it.
